Cesium propionate is a useful synthetic chemical reagent which exhibits reactivity properties that have been dubbed the “cesium effect”. It is e well suited for organic SN2 displacement on primary and secondary halides, mesylates, tosylates, etc. In SN2 displacement reactions the bigger and more electropositive cesium is known to offer better yields compared to lithium, sodium, or potassium analogues. In solar cells, cesium propionate is used as a more hydrophobic additive in cesium lead halide perovskites; where the propionate substitutes the commonly used acetate, chloride, nitrate, phosphate, or sulfate, etc. Cesium propionate is also used as a liquid crystal precursor, epoxide-cleaving agent, ion exchange reagent, cesium catalyst, precursor for cesium lead halide perovskites, cesium-based catalysts, synthetic reagent, aqueous brines used in well servicing fluids, precursor for cesium doped catalysts.
