Description: I have here for sale a 2-book set entitled THE ANATOMY OF MELANCHOLY What it Is, With all the Kinds, Causes, Symptomes, Prognostickes & severall Cures of it. In three Partitions with their Severall Sections, Members and Subsections, philosophically, medicinally, historically opened and cut up by Democritus Junior (aka Robert Burton). It could be the eighth edition published in 1676 by Peter Parker, London - however it is far more likely to be the Tenth Edition of 1804 published by Vernor Hood. This edition had the same pagination as our edition, and also the very attractive engraved Title Pages. There is a Sketch of the Life of the Author at the start of Vol I and an address from the author to the reader. This Tenth Edition is rare with only four copies showing on COPAC.On its surface, the book is presented as a medical textbook in which Burton applies his vast and varied learning, in the scholastic manner, to the subject of melancholia (or clinical depression). Although presented as a medical text, The Anatomy of Melancholy is as much a sui generis (unique) work of literature as it is a scientific or philosophical text, as Burton covers far more than the titular subject. Anatomy uses melancholy as a lens through which all human emotion and thought may be scrutinized, and virtually the entire contents of a 17th-century library are marshalled into service of this goal. It is encyclopedic in its range and reference. Beautiful rich brown calf leather hardboards with 5 raised bands, gilt tooling, black title and volume blocks with gilt lettering. Both volumes in fine condition. A newspaper article stuck to the inside of Vol I. Bookplate to both front endpapers for Hyman Elias, and one for Colonel Arthur Campbell Yate faces it. Pages clean in both volumes. Condition fine. Vol I 461 pages, Vol II 601 pages. 22 x 14 cm.We have over 2000 items in our Ebay shop on a range of subjects, so please feel free to have a browse and see if anything else takes your fancy.
