It was the launch of the bid for president by Democrat Richard A. Gephardt, a Missouri congressman from 1977 to 2005 and U.S. House minority leader from 1995 to 2003. Ticket measures 5 ½” x 2 7/8”. Union bug on lower left-hand corner of face. Gephardt (1941- ) was among the first to announce his candidacy for president in February 1987. He languished in the polls until the early winter when his famous “Hyundai Ad” criticizing trade barriers by South Korea and Japan catapulted him to victory in the Iowa caucuses, first place in South Dakota and a strong second-place finish in New Hampshire, after which his bid deflated. By the time he re-emerged and tried again in 2004, earning the endorsement of Nancy Pelosi, who succeeded him in his House post, he was seen by many as too old-fashioned and his effort never gained traction.
