Description: Antique 1800's Meriden Britannia Company Silverplate Large 10" Ornate Square Footed Basket with Birds in Nest Very pretty Victorian style engravings throughout and at center, featuring two birds in a nest on a tree branch. Ornate engraved columns with leaves and berries, arched and beaded tucked into each side. Engraved in German, in each corner, "Von Freunden dess Frauen Vereins Augsut 18th, 1884" ~ translation from German "From the Friends of the Women's Club." Textured bottom with detailed borders, raised footed base with flowers, leaves and raised designs. This would make a lovely addition to any silver collection. 9 7/8" at widest point x 4 1/2" tall Bears the Meriden Britannia Company Silver mark~Signed on bottom of one foot, history has worn half of the mark away. There are 2 scales inside a shield and the bottom of the mark reads "B Company 1525" 1525 is the pattern number circa 1884, was likely made a bit earlier, this is the date of the engraving History of Meriden Britannia & Co : "The inception of silver plated wares industry dates back to 1847 and to the efforts of Rogers brothers who in their little shop at Hartford developed the electro-plating process.But the business finds its origin as early as 1808, with the establishment in Meriden of a small plant for the production of pewter or Britannia ware. At a later date, it was the foresight of the Britannia makers which turned into a success the efforts of the Rogers brothers. Joining together of the mechanical genius of the Hartford experimenters and the practical business ability of the Britannia makers constituted the definite beginning of silverware making as a business. The Rogers brothers had met with success their activity, but were hampered by lack of capital and qualified organization to market their product.
