Description: Chinese Soapstone Carving Gazelle Monkey Fox Birds Double Wells For consideration is this vintage Chinese soapstone carving featuring a gazelle in the center with a monkey, a fox and 2 birds, as well as 2 different sized bowls or wells. I’m unsure as to the purpose of the wells and have seen suggestions that they are for ink and brushes, or flowers, as well as a few other ideas. Note the flower/star shapes carved into the gazelle’s body! The soapstone colors are light to medium brown with a marbled look and dark brown at the base. This carving measures 4 inches tall, 8¾ inches wide and 2½ inches deep. There is no makers mark. There are a couple of nicks around the mouths of the bowls (see photos). I’m unable to determine if this is how they were finished or if this was damaged at some point in time. This carving is being offered “as is”. Buyer will pay shipping on a 3 pound box.
