Description: Original Conn Baker's business card while he performed as the circus daredevil Diavolo. As Diavolo, he took the stage name of J.C. Carter, which was based on his mother's (Jenney C. Carter) maiden name. After retiring from bicycle racing around 1898, he concentrated on the other passion in his life; landscape painting. After the death of his beloved brother Herman in 1902, he wrote that he needed to leave his hometown of Columbus, Ohio and find a hazardous adventure to get him out of his depression. He found that performing the dangerous loop the loop trick was the adventure he was looking for. He performed the stunt here in America until 1905 then took his act overseas, first to South Africa then India and the British Colonies throughout southeast Asia. He was billed as the highest paid circus performer of his era. This came from Baker's personal estate. If you're interested in more info about Baker and his career as both one of the top American cyclists during the 1890s as well as his career as Diavolo, you can read my book about him titled: Becoming Diavolo, which is available in another of my listings. The card measures 3.4 x 1.9 inches and is in excellent condition with period writing on the back. The card dates from the period in which he was active as Diavolo, approx. 1903 -1908.Shipping to USA address only. I'll ship your purchases in a rigid package via first class mail with tracking.
