Description: Fine binding by J. B. Brechin, binder, of 7 Castle Street, Dundee, for Peter Carmichael (1809-1891), engineer and wealthy industrialist, whose fortune was made in the flax trade, with his bookplate and signature. Brechin's gilt stamped binders signature. Full red leather (possibly seal leather?) with gilt details to covers and spine, raised bands, elaborate ornaments, and marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. An interesting book: "The Pilgrim Fathers; or, the Founders of New England in the Reign of James the First," by W.H. Bartlett, published by Arthur Hall, Virtue & Co. in London, 1853, is the story of the 'Pilgrim Fathers' who left England in the reign of James I. This first edition is known for the quality of its steel engravings, of which there are 28 with tissue guards as well as 31 woodcuts. Condition is Very good+, with the pages and engravings remarkably clear of foxing. Bumped corners, otherwise no issues noted. Heavy 8vo. Nice book, from the personal library of a Scottish bibliophile and enthusiast.
