Description: Hamburgum(Hanseatic City of Hamburg) This is a colored copper engraving view of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg from Braun and Hogenberg's “Civitates Orbis Terrarum”, printed in just a few copies. Title: Hamburgumarea or Location: Hanseatic City of HamburgCartographer: Frans Hogenberg (1535 – 1590) with Georg Braun (1541 – 1622) Year: 1588Size of the plate area: 33cm x 48cm Technology: Copperplate engraving Condition (Perfect/ Very Good/ Good/ Fair/ Fair/ Poor): In good condition. Centerfold backed.Remarks: It is a very decorative and detailed bird's eye view of Hamburg with its fortifications and harbor facilities at the end of the 16th century. Century. The elaborately designed view of the city is complemented by a rich ship decoration in the harbor, two coats of arms cartouches, a legend of the ten most important buildings and a group of figures in the foreground as well as two larger figures in typical costume. This is not the more commonly found, later edition of the bird's eye view of Hamburg, but rather a very rare print of the first engraving plate, which became unusable very early on and was then replaced.
