Bound in decorated red cloth boards with gilt titles present to the spine and front board. Boards have shelf-wear present to the extremities (tear present to the top edge of the spine). No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. The author of this book on Mormonism was executed by firing squad the same year as the book was published, 1877. He was a Mormon Bishop and had been a leader in the Mountain Meadow Massacre of the wagon train passing through Utah on its way to California on September 11, 1857. Because of the closed society of the Mormons and the distraction of the Civil War, it took till September 14, 1876 to bring him to trial. He confessed to his crime, denounced the Mormons, and asked to be executed at Mountain Meadow where he was executed by firing squad on March 23, 1877. The text includes a transcript of Lee's trial, a chapter on his execution, Lee's list of the other Mormons involved in the massacre, and a life of Brigham Young in the appendix.
