It began on August 29, 1944 as a defense against the German occupation troops, indirectly it was also an attack against the authoritarian government headed by Jozef Tiso, as well as an effort to be on the side of the victorious Allied powers of the Second World War. The center of the uprising was Banska Bystrica. German troops defeated the insurgent army, and on the night of October 27-28, 1944, part of its troops switched to guerrilla warfare. Partisans continued fighting against the Nazis until the liberation of the country by Soviet, Romanian and Czecho-Slovak troops in the spring of 1945 (Wiki).
