Description: Rare Vintage Jasper Johns "Fool's House" Print Mounted to Board 1960s Warhol Looks old but no date other than 1962 shown - solid professionally mounted to stiff 1/8" cardboard; obviously originally created that way; thick cardboard shows little or no flex when held horizontally (slight warping) - would frame well Very large 47 3/4" x 20" x 1/8" Shows age with a few scrapes in the image area, frame marks around the edges outside of the image area and slight moisture damage at the bottom left (see photos) Reads: "Fool's House, 1962, oil on canvas with objects, 183 x 91 cm (72 x 36), collection of Mr Jean Christophe Castelli" In pencil on the back: "2918-2" Shipped flat, quickly and very carefully the day payment is received Artist:Jasper Johns (American, born 1930)Title: Fool's House, 1962Medium: Offset lithograph About the Original Johns PaintingA real broom, itself partly painted, hangs from a hook in Jasper Johns' 1962 painting known as Fool's House. The household broom has clearly "painted" a large part of its own canvas as the arc of its brush-stroke, visible on either side of its bristles, makes clear. It is Johns' "paintbrush" even though labeled "broom" in the artist's handwriting near the bottom of its shaft. Below it too are other studio objects - a towel, stretcher and cup - all similarly labeled with arrows pointing to the corresponding object. About Johns, Warhol and Rauschberg“I don’t think I saw myself in relation to Andy (Warhol),” he said, though he added that Warhol did give him a silk-screen with which to practice — but he and Robert Rauschenberg were at least competitive with him in terms of their commercial work. For Johns and Rauschenberg, the window displays were merely a financial tool, but Warhol, who was best-known at the time for his commercial illustration, did so under his own name and had become quite successful.
