Samuel Hopkins (1729-1811) was among the most original theologians America has produced. In the years after the publication of his monumental System of Doctrines, the New Divinity became increasingly identified as Hopkinsianism. The movement won many clerical followers and came to dominate New England Congregationalism during the first two decades of the nineteenth century. Hopkins’s legacy also influenced nineteenth-century reformers. For instance, his doctrine of disinterested benevolence helped inspire the foreign missionary movement in the United States, and his antislavery writings were republished and read by nineteenth-century New England abolitionists. Susanna Anthony (1726-1791) was Congregationalist writer on religion, and was a longtime resident of Newport, Rhode Island. Sabin 32951.
