Description: Very Fine 18th Century Native American Pipe Tomahawk, Plains Origin with Provenance, circa 1760-1780. Recently acquired from the Outstanding Lifetime Artifacts Collection of Dr. Constantine Zariphes, Jr. of Rocky Hill, Connecticut.About 18.25” long, diamond shaped cross section haft, blacksmith forged bleeding heart stamped out blade/bowl, intact hide gasket, numerous brass tacks, stamped line pattern decorations, original patina, weighs about 1.2 lbs. The head is well secured, but can move about 1/16” along its haft. The auction catalog showing provenance and this Tomahawk’s photograph and listing (lot #210) is included.Dr. Zariphes, Jr. began collecting Native American artifacts as a boy of seven, eventually serving as President of the Connecticut Archaeological Society for four years and was lauded by this society for twenty-five years of dedicated service. He passed away this past August at the ripe age of 92, and this early Pipe Tomahawk was one of the items I won at the first of several auctions of this important collection. (Please see my other listings for related items.)The auctioneer, Buzz Hesse, is himself a respected specialist in Ethnographic items and was a personal friend of Dr. Zariphes for fifty years. In his auction catalog Buzz states that “This is one of the most important sales of this type that we have ever held…” I thought this Tomahawk was one of the coolest items there. (Though a 5.5” jasper point sold for over $16,000!)Buzz attested that Dr. Zariphes personally wrote the notes on the red tag attached to this Tomahawk. The tag reads:“This Pipe Tomahawk circa 1760 to 1780 has great Bleeding Heart stamped out and nice flare to the sharp blade. The head of blade of wrought iron curls round the head of blade diamond shaped to base of blade. The Bowl sits top of head of blade on well shaped saddle base with 4 stamped lines. The Haft dimond (sic) shaped with ridgetop and bottom of haft. Rifle (?) branding 5 inches down haft and the down from grip to butt. Brass tacks 5 rows equally spaced bilaterally. Then 2 rows of tacks bilaterally and a single row of tacks along side ridge bilaterally then 2 rows of tacks mid grip bilaterally. At the butt 4 tacks bilaterally.
